Art d'Oc Drawing and Painting
in the Languedoc, South of France
Artistic Heritage of the Languedoc
 Art
has long been practiced in what is now the South of France. There
are some 200 cave paintings currently known that date from prehistoric
times.
 Greek,
Etruscan and Roman art flourished here and can still be seen in
ancient cities. The surprisingly modern looking design on the
right is Roman mosaic.
 In
the medieval period this was home to a sculpur known to art historians
as "The Master of Cabastany". It was also home to the
Troubadours - and thus the cradle of modern western culture.
Painters have long been attracted to the unique light and scenery
of what is now the Languedoc-Roussillon region of the South of
France. From Van Gogh and Gouguin in the north to Matisse, Bracque,
Picasso and Charles Rennie Mackintosh in the South. With Toulouse-Lautrec
not far away to the west and Dali just over the Spanish border.
Fauvism was developed in the Languedoc-Roussillon, while Picaso
and Braque developed Cubism both here and on the other side of
the Pyrennes.
Here are just a few examples of art from the area, presented
chronologically:
